Commentaire: La série relativement courte de Peter Pan est trompeuse. Le musical avait connu deux longs et rentables Try-Out à Los Angeles et à San Francisco, et l’engagement volontairement limité de 16 semaines à Broadway a été porté à 19 semaines.
Lorsque le musical a fermé, c’était un succès financier, critique et public. Mais bientôt un public beaucoup plus large que celui de Broadway allait pouvoir apprécier le spectacle, car avant la production de New York, les producteurs avaient signé un contrat avec NBC pour la télédiffusion de la comédie musicale au printemps 1955.
Quelques jours après la fermeture de la production de Broadway, elle est diffusée en direct (et en couleur) le 7 mars 1955, dans le cadre du Producers’ Showcase de NBC. (plus)

Presse: La critique de The Stage commente ainsi la musique: «M. Gershwin a clairement tendance à la cacophonie et au bruit du jazz», et sur la danse: «Les mouvements agités, si précis et souvent à l’unisson, possèdent les qualités et les défauts complémentaires qui caractérisent les efforts des producteurs américains».
Heureusement, le grand public n’était pas aussi anti-américain que le critique, et le spectacle a donné 263 représentations respectables aux Winter Gardens.

Percy Heming a chanté de nombreux grands rôles d’opéra ainsi que von Schober dans « Lilac Time », il a donc été imaginé comme alternative à Grossmith, qui est toujours resté légèrement frustré qu’on ne l'ait pas considéré comme assez bon!
